Before the Gateway Arch

Two images of downtown St Louis before the Arch was built. The historic site of the city, which had been rebuilt following an 1849 fire, was cleared for construction of the Arch — and the Dan Kiley-designed landscape, intended to evoke the forests Pierre Laclede might have encountered when he founded the city.
