gateway city

This series of diagrams explores St. Louis as a Gateway City.  JNEM presents only one narrative: that of the city as a gateway to the west.  However, there are several other narratives that could be presented at a re-interpreted JNEM.

St. Louis as an industrial and trade center that has undergone significant periods of boom and bust.

St. Louis as a Gateway and destination for African Americans following the emancipation (exodusters) and during the Great Migration.

St. Louis is also an ecological gateway: it is a threshold between grassland and forest ecoregions, and a limit of glaciation.
