new population low

STL Today: St. Louis falls to its lowest population in more than century

The 2010 Census indicates that St Louis’ population has fallen to 319,000 — despite the fact that many had thought the city had reversed the long trend of population loss.

How will the city respond?  Youngstown 2010 and Detroit Works Project are two American examples of a shrinking cities approach: rather than attempt to stem the loss of population, cities attempt to reorganize to be more sustainable, efficient and dense, despite population loss.  This means consolidating healthy neighborhoods and finding new uses for the remaining vacant land–often, in these plans, urban farming or ecological restoration.
